This is a documentary about the mental health institutionalization of youth. It was completed as part of the social justice program at Hamline University in Saint Paul, Minnesota. It explores mental health institutions in the context of Irving Goffman's 'total institution' and looks at parallels between the institutionalization of youth in mental hospitals and the prison system. One part historical, one part sociological, one part personal - former patients share their experiences. Based on personal experience, we asked as our premise - if you are sending someone somewhere to get healthy, why would you send them to a prison? In this film we offer a critical look at the institutionalization of minors.

"Not allowed to play guitar or draw" that's pretty harsh.

I found that really useful. I'm here due to the fact my mate all of the sudden became awesome with girls. He went from a no-one into being amazing. He behaved as if it was standard for a little bit. He ultimately came clean two days ago. Turns out he makes use of the Jake Ayres Master Attraction Formula. Google it if you want to know about it... He's dating a beauty... Where are the best videos online?

yeah some people who are trouble children or don't have great parents end up being institutionalized. I met two girls like that when I was in for just 2 weeks.

From my experience in hospital(s). I had no rights in the first and was lucky to get out of my room at all. Was abused by a patient. The second i was abused by staff (physically and sexually) reporting it was a waste of my time (believe me i tried) both times it only inflamed the issues that had caused me to be there in the first place. I am from the UK and was treated in the UK. 1st admission to ward in a public hospital, second privately. Public/private no difference in my experience.

As someone who has been in a mental hospital both as a teen and as an adult, I can tell you it is way easier to be an adult in those places. As a minor, I found it scary to even ask the nurse for things I needed. We were discouraged to do anything but sit down and be quiet.
