Now Nike Park in Addison Illinois, this was formerly a radar tracking site for surface-to-air (SAM) missiles. When built in the mid 50s this was pretty much all by itself on the highest ground in the area, a perfect site to watch for Ruskie bombers inbound for Chicago.
Once the bomber was aquired by radar a intercept was plotted and sent to the missile launch site aprox 1 mile to the SSE

  • too much wind in the audio

  • Too much wind noise due to too much reliance on low end equipment. Noise and auto focus problems have been dogging me a while (this video is one of my older ones). I hope to have a newer, better camera, by the end of this summer. Thank-you for commenting.

  • I was told that there were homes on Army Trail Road, but by the time I got interested in this they had been removed. One of my greatest regrets was passing on a chance to sneak into the bunkers. After the base was deactivated the bunkers were still there. I had no clue that there was a "missile base" here and I thought it was a BS story. So my friends got to sneak in, and I stayed home. There are some homes left at the site down by WaterFall Glen FP used for the rangers.

  • this site was almost more fun than the other. climbing the radar towers was cool.we could see my grandparents house from the top.unfortuneatly they saw us one time though. oops. (grounded).my dad says you could hear it on the radio every rotation of the radar killed signal for a sec.

  • Thanks for posting. I remember the military homes on Army Trail across from the Elementary school. They were occupied thru the early 90's. I thought they were families of soldiers working at Nike, but if they stopped using the sites in the mid 70's than I'm not so sure.
