The answer to the riddle in the title will be obvious but I thought it would be a good example of this physical property. Which property? I'm sure someone will find out. If not I'll modify this description at a later date to give the answer....

  • I say you are using an ambient light sensor, where all you need to do to dim the screen is mover your hand in front of it, without actually touching it.
