St John of God was a Portuguese friar who had expirienced mental illness in his life and had at one point been committed to a mental hospital. While in the hospital he realized the poor conditions that existed there and spent his life caring for those poor who were mentally ill.
Not only an example of Shane's song writing skill but also an indication that he understands that no one should be written off

@poppi400 shane macgowan is ireland's version of johnny cash . one of the last true singer's with the gifted eye of a true poet (leonard cohen.)i remember when the snake was released in the states . at the time i was living usic in austin, texas .i read the review and the only thing the "critic" could talk about the condition of shane's teeth . i guess he didn't sing "ya'll" enough ! fuck texas and i feel sorry for those who miss out or can't understand a "true" artist from a" bullshit artist !"
