I leave Yellowstone behind enter the Grand Teton National park in the south; a park which is also worth it. Much of the dazzling view are stipulated by the rock formations along the Interstate 89 South, which takes me south thourgh the villages of Jackson and Montpellier to the Interstate 15. In the afternoon almost half of the schedule has finished; this gives me the occasion to make an acrobatic tour along the Snake River, which downstream partly goes with me to Salt Lake City. The day is beautiful with a sun and 25 degrees centigrade. In Jackson it is time for a burger and a cola; haven't eaten since half six; however I took some water. At Alpine Junction the 26 West and 89 South splits up. It is the 89 South, which I must follow. I cross villages such as Freedom, Tayne and Groover. Villages with sometimes 200 inhabitants. If I stop after the village of Smoot, just as tp strech the legs, it remarks me how silent it is. And, how splendid the mountainous landscape is. The river has said farewell to me at Alpine Junction. I am ahead of schedule.
I will explore the city of the Mormons by foot. At first, Salt Lake City (SLC) does not seem interesting. The "Lonely Planet USA", the bible for each professional traveller such as me, shows in only 3 pages - all there is to do. From a city as large as Breda (180,000 inhabitants) don't expect mush, tells LP. Downtown SLC starts at Rio Grande Street; a trendy street with even trendy boutiques. A fountain is all that reminds of the Olympic Winterspelen of 2002. Through South Temple, the main street, I walk to what I think that is the business district. There is a large numbers of office towers, among them large banks. It turns out to be a sparkling city part, full of tourists, employees on their lunch break and city people. I continue my way to the church of the Latter Day Saints; this church believes "the end of times is near, because people a made a mess of Mother Earth. The lord will descend rapidly on us, to punish us massively.". Stay away from it. Please, do not stay away from the former central station of the Union Pacific Railways, in the middle of the city: with splendid partition peeling ring, window paintings, and light. The counters to which you could order your train ticket, still exist. The station hall was built in 1847, and has a capacity of 1,500 people (that stands on the front door). But it already is some years out of service. No, is you arrive in SLC by train, you will arrive at the edgeof the city. The day is ended at Capitol Hill, the Council house of the state Utah. The Vietnam-monument honors the died soldiers, who were inhabitant of the state Utah. At the entrance a meeting of students is held. Miss. Utah, a beautiful woman, takes the word. With my camera equipment everyone thinks that I am from a newspaper, therefore it is possible to photograph Miss. Utah unlimited.
