Here I am creating a backup of my entire Macbook Pro using SuperDuper http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/ so I can run a repair against my drive without worrying about ruining anything.

Before this though, I am creating a second partition on the external Firewire drive using the disk utility. The nice thing with Apple is this sort of functionality has been around for years while with Windows, you had to buy 3rd party applications like Acronis, Norton Ghost or my favorite Terabyte for Windows/DOS.

This could also be called cloning as well. It's different than a true "backup" because this takes a complete snapshot of your entire drive including the operating systems, the applications and your data. In the case of OSX, you actually get a bootable image so in case your system dies, you can be up and running in minutes. This is why I chose to go with SuperDuper instead of Time Machine. I will continue to use Mozy for my file backups.

  • Thanks, so so much! Exactly what I needed when I needed it!

  • That's so hot that you're PC/Mac literate.

  • I use two external drives, a USB for TimeMachine and a Firewire for making a bootable back-up with SuperDuper. I've always been good about backing-up my documents, photos, etc. but I had a disk fail once and lost all my applications. Never going to let that happen again, it's a bigger pain than I anticipated. Great video adriarichards!

  • Great info and easy on the eyes...nice combo!

  • Great information! The best reviews come from the users (IMO)...take care =}

  • I love you, Thanks for the info, love it when a women knows there way around their computer

  • Though TimeMachine isn'y bootable, you can easily put your whole system back on a new drive with this program in OS X, when your current disk would crash.

    On the other hand, when you need really (and then I mean REALL :P ) need your computer and cannot wait until you have a new disk (because of work, for instance) this is a really useful program!
