Italian Newsreel: 21 June 1942 -- World War II: Tobruk falls
Considered by Winston Churchill as "one of the heaviest blows I can recall during the war", Rommel's Panzerarmee Afrika captured Tobruk on 21 June 1942. Allied forces were overrun and 25,000 British and Commonwealth troops were taken prisoner by the combined German\Italian forces.

  • @romanlegions You only have to read accounts of the whole campaign and see the number of Italians captured to see the Italians didnt want to be involved in the battle.

  • @OzisGodscountry Well I guess accounts vary and situations too. But any soldiers with a degree o training and espirit de corps can pull their weight properly.

  • @romanlegions Actually Rommel was furious he couldnt get the Italian troops to fight with any bravado .In one attack the Italian infantry supporting Rommels tanks all at once charged forward at the Australians only to drop their guns and surrender after a single shot was fired at them.I think they were too concerned with how they looked in their uniforms to be effective in battle lol.

  • @ameredon1 The problems was leadership. Rommel respected the Italians as soldiers but not as officers.Rommel had a small light corps against the British, barley over 20,000 men. Rommel knew of the limitations of the Italian officer corps and the capabilities of the soldiers. He used the Italians to great effect when they were properly motivated and led by experienced and competent officers.

  • @acerb45666555 The US are torutring prisoners in Guantanamo bay, yet your generals aren't doing anything are they? thats self centred too

  • @FairladyS130 Maybe not. But one hell of a great tactician!

  • @ipimees ..ps: the only ones worthy of compassion are the regular guys who were conscripted and had no idea what the big picture was. read ...Blood Red Snow. by Gunter Koschorrek. you will see the facts from the mouth of a German veteran.

  • @ipimees ..youre response is uninformed. Rommel was a professional. he knew better than to shut his eyes to the vile and savage acts of the NSDAP! he knew about the camps, the repression of German and other nations, but he kept quiet to preserve his career! a self centered act!
