The European Commission's headquarter in Brussels, the Berlaymont building, was empty for 13 years while being renovated because it contained cancer-giving asbestos. The European executive including the commissioners moved back into the Berlaymonster, as it has come to be known, in November 2004. Today, 18th May 2009 the building was evacuated again, due to a fire.
