I first heard this song on Bette Midler's "Live from Cleveland" in the 1970's... it ripped my heart apart and left me soaked with tears... ever since then I've tried to make eye contact with old people, greet them, smile at them... as I look in the mirror these days I realize, soon I will be "old people"... will you do the same?

I hope the new generation grabs a hold of some real life down to earth music and carries it forward so that this doesn't fizzle out.

@didjndrums I couldn't agree more. This song, and John Prine (though we are all getting old) never get old.

This is perhaps one of the most beautiful renditions of what is perhaps one of the most beautiful songs in the world. Not enough people even know who John is.

Why does he look precisely as I expected him too look?

Aint it funny how ya dont really need to be a first class singer to be awesome. John never fails to make the hairs on my arms stand on end! This song is so melancholy, i feel as though im looking at his life through his eyes when i listen to it. The same feeling i get when i hear Chet Atkins singing " Still cant say goodbye". Now thats a propper tear jerker.

saw JP in KCMO last night and have been listening to his music for a long time. As I have aged, this song has changed in its meaning to me. First, it was 'be kind to older people because its a kind thing to do'. Later it's 'these are my aging parents he's talking about' and then finally 'this will be me and all of us eventually'.
