Nope.
It's baking the spine, then bending it on the spine.
The very dry pages are then easy to rip down the middle. It's the same with a newspaper page. It naturally rips in one direction. Turn it 90 degrees and it will rip in a curve to go the other way.

Do a search and you will find lots of pages. It is all in bending the book so that to start with a smaller number of pagtes are being ripped.
