Technology once thought to be science fiction is today being employed by the U.S. Air Force to perform seemingly impossible missions. Now, through a series of TV commercials created by Austin-based advertising agency, GSD&M Idea City, and featuring actual Air Force personnel, these missions and the technology used to carry them out are being brought to life. Shot by director Phil Joanou, each spot begins in a futuristic, sci-fi world created mostly in CG by visual affects boutique, Mass Market. In one spot an unmanned aircraft flying over a barren Mars-like planet saves a group of ground troops when it identifies an enemy sniper waiting for them. Another spot shows what happens when two pieces of space junk collide sending debris on a potentially cataclysmic collision course with a vital communication satellite. While each spot is portrayed in a cinematic, sci-fi way, we reveal in the end that these missions are in fact not science fiction, but instead what the men and women of the Air Force do every day.
