Antlion on the left constructing a conical pitfall by flicking sands off with its jaws, crawling backward anticlockwise. The right one, on the other hand, dragging subdued prey underground. Video captured by webcam on early-June, 2007 in Japan. The plastic bottle was 8cm in diameter.
Music : Submersed - Flicker

  • Antlions are my all time favorites coz you don't have to go to other planets just to look for aliens. Its all there:-)

  • can't agree more.

what a cool ambush predator the antlion is!

i wonder if the spiral direction of their digging is always the same (clockwise or counterclockwise).

we can find their nests on the dry ground under the floor here in jpn.

i am curious to know what sort of habitat the tropical antlion lives in ur country (phillippines)?

  • We have a lot of antlions back in my home town province back in Leyte (Visayan Islands). They are more spotted in in coloration and a I think its the same size just like yours in ur country Japan. You can find them close to beaches under cottages, and nipa huts with a lot of shade from the sun. Dude, you should the "Madagascan Giant Antlion" These guys are about an inch long and are known to be the wolds larges antlions!

  • big thanks to you for the interesting infos.

i would love to visit ur country someday.

    sounds like a paradise!

  • Haha, one at the right is like "Stop kicking sand into my hole!"

Closest insect we get to these is the green lacewing's larvae. Their bite itches.

  • cool

  • thanks for sharing the worthful video.

  • thanks for commenting!

i have read that the antlion injects venom to paralyze its prey.
