those "mics" are old telephone receivers that i wired some 1/4" output jacks and volume trimpots to. who knew something from the garbage can could be something that is both functional and cool at the same time.
i used to sing through a pair of headphones... try running your ipod ear buds through a pre-amp and then sign your favorite celine dion song into one of those little things and you'll have a diy mic in minutes. amazing, yes.
