Teenage Hero Emerges From A Tragic Car Accident

When a sudden and brutal car accident abruptly ended a family trip to a Cal Ripken regional playoff tournament, fourteen year old Calvin Mason Wilder emerged a hero. In a time when teenagers are all too often underestimated because they appear to only text, Tweet, and hang out in a virtual Facebook world, this young man stepped up and made a lifesaving difference.

West Palm Beach, FL July 25, 2011 -- While many adults ask themselves, "What's wrong with kids today?" a West Palm Beach child hero emerges from wreckage to save his brothers and his parents.

On July 19th, a South Florida family was on their way to a Cal Ripken regional playoff tournament in Tennessee when a tire blow out caused their vehicle to lose control and roll over 6 times. On the second roll, one of the boys, Braiden Wilder, was ejected from the back window and watched as his 3 brothers, mother and father flipped four more times, ultimately landing upside down.

Once the vehicle came to a stop, Mason Wilder (14) saw his brother pick himself up off the road, severely injured and covered in blood. Mason managed to release his seat belt and climb through a window to help his brother, bringing a t-shirt and applying it to Braiden's chin, which was bleeding profusely. Mason instructed his brother to "hold it tight and apply pressure" to minimize the bleeding.

Mason then made his way back to the vehicle, smelling gasoline and seeing sparks coming from the engine. He climbed back in the car and managed to free his youngest brother (Jackson) who was still hanging upside down and helped him and his other brother, Ethan, through the window, removed their shirts, which were covered in glass, and brought them to safety next to their other brother.

Once his brothers were safe, he made one final trip back to the truck to help his parents. His mother was unconscious, eyes open and hanging upside down from her seat belt. Fearing the worst, he talked his dad into climbing out of the small opening left after the roof crushed the window, used a pillowcase that was thrown out of the car to create tourniquets to stop the bleeding from the gashes in his dad's arm.

Mason called 9-1-1 and sat with his family while they waited for the paramedics to arrive from over 30 miles away. Mason and his two youngest brothers were released from the hospital the same night. His parents were transferred to be with Braiden, who was airlifted to St. Mary's from the scene of the accident.
