you have to remember field events are far more technical then sprint events, so sprinters will seem to be producing more consistant better performances because of this
That is one way to look at things, but if an "average" Olympian came into the final of the 100m and ran 9.20 (The rough equivilant of Beamons improvement) but tailed off, would you say he only had "one good race"? He would be one of, if not the greatest Olympian ever. There are no 1 hit wonders in Track and Field. If you can do it better, you are better. As much as i respect consistent athletes, it doesnt show up in the record books.
I remember having seen the live broadcast late at night in 1968 with two school mates and we were tired and about to go to bed when Bob Beamon flew like an arrow and seemed to float through the air...it was unbelievable and is ever unforgotten. Unfortunately the clip is of too low quality to really relay the feel of the moment....
