blane vs burden is stupid, burden did his major works 35 years ago not making any money from it. He changed art forever and for no money. Now he makes money but all the conceptual artists from that time period had to sell out in the 80's because there was so much money to be made, so artists like burden, nauman, mccarthy, baldessari, acconci started making objects that they could sell. blane is using intervention techniques that were created by burden and other performance artists 35 years ago.
Burden is an actual artist who, though he was the first to do, well, stunt works,he left that behind and makes exquisite works now--beautiful model bridges, for example--and the thousands of epigones and frauds who mimic him do so to no use. He has NO relation to an entertainer. NONE!
my humble two cents: Blane has an ultimate goal, a target of success in his stunts. Whereas Burden's stunts are performed with a different state of mind. The ambition of doing something until everyone appreciates the endurance is simply not there with burden so that invalidates any comparison.
I'm not saying that his work is utterly without value, but if Burden learned a few card tricks and gave interviews to MTV instead of artforum he'd be David Blaine. Doesn't hanging from a transparent box for forty days over London do all those things you attribute to Burden? In fiction we have a notion of a "David Blaine," in subjectivity we have the spectacle of people interacting with him whether by hitting golf balls or waving burgers at him. The empiricism needs no elaboration.
You seem a bright person....what have you to say. Burden is way beyond Blaine! Blaine's a magician! Burden is all about empiricism & subjectivity, and fiction. He comments on all...His works attempt to unify all 3 things. Anyway, It's all about comparisons and metaphores, etc.

Assuming Burden has any integrity. It is a point of debate that I sort of go back and forth on.

I said the same thing when Blane started doing the "endurance stunts"
"What, is he Chris Burden now?
I feel more like Blane is Burden with out the integrity or sense of humor.
To tell you the truth I'd like to see Blane and Burden work together. (Or, at the very least, duke it out on celebrity boxing.)

He's basically David Blaine without the cards.

You guys are thinking way too much about this! You're trying too hard to force something into being art!
