This is part of a segmented 61-star speedrun of Super Mario Galaxy, playing as Luigi. Segment 9 has 6 stars: Freezeflame 1 - The Frozen Peak of Baron Brrr, Freezeflame 2 - Freezeflame's Blistering Core, Freezeflame 4 - Frosty Cosmic Luigi Race, Freezeflame 3 - Hot and Cold Collide, Gusty Garden 1 - Bunnies in the Wind, and Gusty Garden 2 - The Dirty Tricks of Major Burrows.

Even after a lot of practice, this segment was really challenging when I started real attempts a few days ago. In the past couple of days, though, I managed to narrow down the difficult spots with changed strategies, so I finally managed a decent segment. There are a few mistakes in this run, but I think I'm ready to accept that since this segment has so much going on. If significant strategy improvements come up, though, then I'll be willing to re-do this.

(To the Bedroom) - This method doesn't save as much time as you might think, but it does save 1-2 seconds compared to long-jumping past the Library and Kitchen.

The Frozen Peak of Baron Brrr (1m25s) - I spun a bit too early after getting the ice flower, but it didn't cost much time. The Baron Brrr fight had some fast hits.

Freezeflame's Blistering Core (1m12s) - Many thanks to Miles for the huge shortcut at 4:12. Sword of Seals's IL run also helped, though I did a couple of parts differently. The gravity change at 4:04 can be done from the middle level of the tower instead of the top, but it wasn't very consistent for me.
Whew, I almost missed the ride at 4:18 - I was trying to fall down with my second long jump, but it took a little longer because I had some trouble with my jump angle there.

Frosty Cosmic Luigi Race (0m32s) - This one was interesting. First, I got the (random) landing cancel at the start: this is a very good level to get a landing cancel in, because you can just jump backwards into the race trigger. But at the start of the race, I missed the boost start. That might sound disastrous, but I don't think it cost more than a second; the boost start helps for running across the first couple of platforms, but it doesn't help with skating. After the first gravity change, I fell a bit short of the ice after my extra jump, so that was another mistake. Overall, I'd say the landing cancel and the mistakes canceled each other out in terms of time.

Hot and Cold Collide (1m22s) - The only real mistake was bumping into the second ice-flower pedestal. On a previous run I was too far to the right there and lost a life, so that's probably why I was leaning too much to the left here.

Bunnies in the Wind (1m14s) - Think this went well. You can bounce off the piranha plant after jumping off of the first Floaty Fluff, but I don't think it really gains or loses any time. I intentionally avoided the ? coins that make starbits appear. The first ? coin in particular makes the game lag a lot when you collect it.
Thanks to Miles for showing that the bunny can be caught in one long jump (in his single-segment run, no less). The way I did it looks strange, but I found I had the best success if I faced forward and tweaked my jump hard to the right.

The Dirty Tricks of Major Burrows (2m32s) - The moles move as long as they're on-camera or nearly on-camera, so your movements on the first mole planet will affect the next three moles. It's possible to get the second and third moles close enough so that you can take them both out with a single spin, but I've only managed that once or twice.
There are invisible barriers between the apples until you trigger the worms, so you can't really take any shortcuts there, as far as I know.
My main mistake in this level was pounding too early at the last hit on Major Burrows. I guess that was the most costly mistake in this segment.

  • Yay, the next part!

Wow... I can't believe how you're able to do such risky things (like at 4:30 and 8:21) in a long segment (or at least they look risky, haha)! It's easy to see how this was one of the hard segments you have planned. Glad you were able to get a nice attempt. ;)

  • @LightBlueYoshi Yeah, 4:30 is kind of risky because the spins don't always come out fast enough - and for some reason, if I'm bouncing on the lava then the door won't open. And pretty much all of the skating is prone to errors!

    Anyway, thanks.

  • out of curiosity, are the comet appearances completely deterministic or do you have to restart segments for them?

  • @bsznm It's mostly deterministic. With every completed star, each dome alternates between 2 states: having a comet in orbit (if a comet is available), and not having a comet in orbit. When you unlock comets at 13 stars, the Terrace has a comet in orbit, while all other domes do not - and you can predict the behavior from there.

I'm not sure what the general rule is when a dome has more than one possible comet. But I did enough testing in the Terrace to get the Honeyhive comet when I wanted to.

  • you threw starbits at major burrows? does that slow him down or something?

  • @gamefreakY Yeah, it slows him down.
