So is this robot using a vision system to detect notes or is it somehow tied directly into the game. (It's getting the notes from the game itself)
Also I think better results could be achieved if instead of having rotating wheels you designed a small spring loaded four bar linkage that can press down on the buttons. Your wheels are over rotating or under rotating im guessing. :/ That way you don't even have to account for an angle ... just on and off.

@Batzter cuz then its not REALLY playing guitar hero

what if you replaced the flaps with 'fingers'? the other programs like this that i have seen use fingers, its a lot more accurate, plus the motors could keep up to expert play

too much talkin'

It's a cool project and one of the first thing I will attempt to create once my 2.0 arrives.
However, wouldnt it be easier to use a controller instead of the guitar?
Had you read the description Kerbykody, the robotic kit (lego) isnt fast enough to do that. The actual program can keep up with it. Let's see you buy us a robotic kit and I will be sure to post the video for you. ;)

I'm only asking myself one question, if you go on expert.....will it go fast enough to hit most of the note and stuff,or is the motor going to burn or just break etc, etc...

No, the motors don't catch fire, they just don't move fast enough. The reason I say the program is not flawed is because he has a graphical feedback mechanism that records the visual recognition of a note. The motors unfortunately cannot match the speed of the expert game.

No it does not see the actuators hit the guitar, that is done through the program. There is a webcam that is hooked up to the laptop. The laptop reads the input from the camera (sees color & notes) and tells one of the NXT's to hit a note, strum, etc. This is NOT using the NXT-G program, this is using JAVA (lejos).

The main problem was the Tacho consistency. The motors will go 40 degress one time then 38 then 37 then 40 then 38 , etc. until the flippers are off track. Again, for the money the NXT is probably one of the best JAVA-BOT buys out there.
This student is incredible and found a million fixes (while working on multiple other projects). Just look at other college level students and see how a team of them struggle more than he did.
