make sure none of the pins on the ecu are bent

It could be that the ecu is bad. I had one that did the exact same thing.

A manual ecu will NOT work in an auto, an auto ecu WILL work in a manual. Is your car manual or auto?

@TheCamelbeanie mine's auto, was told donor car was auto. Purchased a remapped ecu from a tuning company a few months ago. Thanks for the tip, i'm doing a manual conversion soon so hopefully I don't need to send back the mapped ecu to work with the manual gearbox.

it starts fine with my original ecu. I've done everything you say here. Only othe thing could be the original key? I'll see if the seller has access to the key of the donor car.
