In the 20s & 30s Deep Ellum- an area of downtown Dallas Texas was a happening area... after its heyday, it lay dormant for many years until the late 80s and early 90s when several clubs, businesses, and artists/musicians began calling it home. When I was growing up and in high school during the late 70s, only local "cover" bands could play in Dallas Fort Worth clubs. With the revitalization of Deep Ellum, the area supported artistic creativity on many levels and the music scene really took off...Theater Gallery, Prophet Bar, Trees, DaDa, etc. Enjoy the memories... Also a word of warning: please excuse the poor videotape condition and cheesy transitions- this was of course created over 16 years ago!

  • I just found out some sad news... Alex Magocsi, the music writer who appears in my documentary, passed away in New Mexico last year (2006) Alex, you were a kind, intelligent soul- you will be missed. Phil

  • Why no mention of The Twilight Room (1982). There hasn't been a more authentic, underground scene since. I saw The Exploited and The U.K. Subs play there when I was just 14. Changed me forever. Fucking Legendary.

Theater Gallery was pretty cool. Deep Ellum was dark, not really any street lights worked, no hot dog stands, definitely no 7-11. It existed somewhere between no man's land and the end of the world. Loved it while it lasted.

  • COME BACK ALIVE DALLAS!!! it feels dead here! but i kinda feel a Dallas revival coming

  • Wow Alex Magocsi is dead, I knew him in the early 90's he would come up to this house in Plano and play drums for a band that was trying to form and make some kinda music. Alex drums, Wayne Sutton, guitar who went on to some success with Patrice Pike in Austin. Amanda (I think Moore) good friend of Edie Brickell sang vocals and played rhythum and Ben Barcardo formerly of Bruhaha! To bad I remember it was like yesterday!

  • what does she mean by "russell found god"?

  • Russell Hobbs is a huge tool. Not even kidding. The Prophet Bar has had some great performances even in recent times (Peter Murphy, for example), but The Door is the worst thing you can ever add to it. On a happier note though, Trees, Club Dada, The Liquid Lounge, and the Double Wide still remain

  • We used to call the new places, like The Aviator, S&M bars (you know... STAND AND MODEL). I miss Clearview in '85.

  • I live in Deep Ellum and love it here. After living in the Dallas area for 10 years, I've lived almost everywhere: Plano, Lewisville, Irving, etc. But no place is as awesome as DE.

  • i grew up in dallas and remember deep ellum around this time and through the early 00s..

deep ellum is one of the most important cultural places in dallas, unfortunately since around 2003 or so it's seen hard times. i used to party down there, it was a taste of real night life for a teenager. saw some great shows at club clearview and the now defunct gypsy tea room.

deep ellum will rise again! RIP gypsy tea room

  • Chumley's!

  • I KNOW THE BREWERY DOWNTOWN WAS THE SHIT!! bUT IT IS GONE. OH WELL DALLAS SUCKS ANYWAY.

  • Deep Ellum will rise again

  • How about The Bomb factory,,,anyone remember that? I honestly liked DE better when you could give a bum 5 bucks to watch your car for you. Damn those were great times. Gone forever, I guess
