I first tried to upload this in Nov, '08, but it was blocked due to copyright assertions. It is still blocked in some countries, but I hope most of you can enjoy. Eddie Heywood was an American jazz pianist who was very popular in the 40s and 50s. Early in his career his newly-formed band played backup for Billie Holiday. Between 1947 and 1950, Heywood was stricken with a partial paralysis of his hands and could not play at all. He did recover, however, and continued to perform until the 1980s. He is probably best known for his 1956 composition "Canadian Sunset," which he recorded with Hugo Winterhalter and his orchestra. A cover version of "Canadian Sunset" by Andy Williams also hit the top 10 in 1956. This selection, also composed by him, hit #11 on the pop charts in 1956.

  • JUST MISSED!!! "Soft Summer Breeze" just missed making the Billboard's Top 10 chart; it peaked at No. 11 and spent a total of 25 weeks the Top 100 (It was Mr. Heywood's only record to make the Top 100 but as stated above he played the piano solo on Hugo Winterhalter's hit "Canadian Sunset" in 1956 and that record peaked at No. 2 and stayed in the top 100 for 31 weeks!!!)

  • @robertquentincobb I think of Eddie Heywood as one of the ultimate cross-over artists of his day. I listened to this for over 40 years never realizing he was a jazz pianist. His style is sooooooo smooooooth !!! I still wonder how many who dislike jazz (they think) actually LOVE this song? His sound is pure magic to my ears. I've spent nearly 3 years rediscovering the music of my youth & finding 1000s more songs along the way. 800 playlists are my tribute to a century of worldwide music. chuck

  • How Fantastic this is. Listen to that second Bar where breaks lose and plays Blue Note. What a Marvelous Song. WE ON YOUTUBE, Appreciate this upload. Thanks.

  • My brother (nearly eighty) and not too computer savvy, when I asked him of all the tunes he wanted me to look up, it was this. He was amazed how fast we can find music now.

If you like this try searching "Canadian Sunset" and "Near You" (different artists but great piano)

  • This hit by Eddie Heywood would finish at #54 for the year, 1956. On July 9, 1955, Bill Haley and His Comets hit #1 with Rock Around the Clock, signifying the start of the Rock Era. On April 21, 1956, Elvis Presley hit #1 with Heartbreak Hotel, sending this new sound into the stratosphere.
