great to hear this again - the best track on this version of Tommy. Merry Clayton was the real thing. Does somebody have the brief but beautiful version of Sandy Denny as the Nurse?
@pollyleetie AMEN 2 THAT! Merry Clayton Does It Ev'rytime....She Did It On The Rolling Stone Classic "Gimmie Shelter" And She Did It Again Here But This Time 4 The Who.....Her Voice Just Ooozes PURE Soul!
It's certainly beautiful, and if I hadn't seen the movie, I would certainly say its the best version. But it loses the intensity that is so important to the song. She's the Acid Queen, and she's going to open his mind with the mind-expanding powers of acid, not lull him to sleep with some sugar and some nyquil.
I'm the first one to tell you that I love classically styled rock, but this really takes the rock out of rock opera. Tina Turner owns this song.
Truly the best version! Well, it was the first version I got to know. Might have spoiled me...

Tina Turner's version from the Ken Russell film is far superior to this.

In my opinion, from best to worst at this song, I would say it goes Patty LaBele, Merry, then Tina Turner

Despite my sentiments, I can't seem to stop listening to this version.

Again, beautiful, but very flawed.
