Surf Guitar Instrumentals - Today's lick is a typical 'take-off break' used in guitar solos of the early instrumental rock `n' roll style. The influence of the great Chuck Berry is unmistakable in this phrase. Berry exerted a tremendous effect on the rock and pop guitarists of the 1950s, and in subsequent eras, with his patented chord-based soloing approach. This lick is in D and is situated in the 10th position. It is made entirely of double stops, most of which are fingered as barred two-note chords. The first finger bars double stops at the 10th fret and the third finger bars double stops at the 13th and 12th frets. The double stop in bar 2 is slurred with a finger slide. The entire lick is played with the energetic strummed lead guitar technique associated with Chuck Berry (don't spare the downstrokes!) and is a classic phrase found in countless forms of rock, blues and pop in the future.
