Cell therapy for liver diseases is an advanced method when liver progenitor cells (hepatoblasts) grown in artificial culture are transplanted into patient's body without a major surgery and repopulate damaged liver. This is a way to overcome inflammation and reverse fibrosis process when a degenerative liver disease is treated.

Cell therapy with liver progenitor cells has revealed high efficiency of treatment for liver diseases caused by different reasons, such as * Chronic hepatitis caused by viruses: * Steatohepatitis (advanced stage of fatty liver disease); o Hepatitis C virus, o Hepatitis B virus; * Progressive liver fibrosis caused by any reason; * Compensated liver cirrhosis; * Advanced liver cirrhosis
Depending on a type and stage of liver disease cell therapy is applied alone or in combination with other treatment methods. 1. The advantages of infusion of cultured hepatoblasts compared with whole liver transplantation or with transplantation of mature liver cells taken from donor liver include but not limited: In contrast to major surgery hepatoblasts cells are infused through a vascular catheter;
2. It is possible to avoid necessity of immunosuppression, i.e. without committing a patient to lifelong immune suppression.
3. Cultured hepatoblasts in contrast to mature liver cells taken from donor liver have extensive proliferative properties. So cultured hepatoblasts repopulate damaged liver much easier and they are more viable which give them a way to overcome inflammation and reverse fibrosis process when a degenerative liver disease is treated.
4. Hepatoblasts are smaller than donor liver cells so hepatoblasts never worsen portal hypertension or cause lung emboli.
5. It can be repeated some time later relatively easily without any major discomfort for the patient;
6. It is cheaper in comparison with whole liver transplantation;
