Parts 1 and 2 of Made by Hand, Baidarkas on the Hudson together. Now with better color and updated credits to include Yonkers Paddling and Rowing Club (www.yprc.org). This video documents the construction of three skin on frame kayaks built in a shop underneath a train bridge. It took the builders about four months at a day or two a week. Jack Gilman, who has been a driving force in the YPRC for over a decade, teaches the course every winter. Baidarka is a Russian word meaning "little boat". The kayak is one of the most efficient forms of transportation, and one of the most beautiful boat forms, every created. Yonkers lies next to the great Hudson River and has a long coastline. It has two commercial docks, Diamond sugar and the Yonkers pier, three boat clubs, Palisades, Yonkers Yacht and the Corinthian, and the Yonkers Paddling and Rowing Club, which is dedicated to human powered vessels, such as canoes and kayaks.

  • Wonderful place ..... wonderful buildings ...!!!!

  • @gianniiandolo

Thank you, I am so glad you like it. Jack Gilman taught himself and then he started teaching everyone else. The two smoke stacks are from an abandoned electrical power station and the kayak shop is in an underpass below a bridge. Yonkers is just north of New York City and is one of the oldest inhabited places in New York. And, of course, the Hudson River helped to open North America to Europe. I wonder where you paddle?

  • Jack is the Baidarka master! ;-)

  • @gianniiandolo I paddle in Palermo in Italy .....!! I discovered the world dell'autocostruzione only 4 years ago! Since I started I never stopped .;-)... built in strip planking, S & G, Skin on Frame. For me and for my 2 sons ..... Now I'm building a baidarka. ... even in strip planking the North Star by Rob Macks ... Despite the many miles short, self-building brings people together.!

  • I was part of all this. And looking at it 2 years later, it was a fun time.

Starting this year's class next week.
