Guys, you obviously don't know how the coins work unless you played Super Mario Kart and Mario Kart Super Circuit. The coins increase your top speed, and it's brought back in Mario Kart 7 to again increase Top Speed and unlock Kart parts. Kids these days.

This was, still is, and always will be, my favourite of the Mario Kart series. Nice variety, excellent music, brilliant courses, fantastic characters, and no Nintendo racing victory screen rubs it in with the "Congratulations!" (and you maybe uncork a few bottles of sparkling cider while you're at it) like Super Mario Kart.
