@themadmallard it fades out because the second instrument fires from the same... soundset as the weapon firing and enemy death sounds. Therefore, the second instrument wont be able to fire in limbo with the other sounds on that same soundset. (i just made up that word. what it's really called is beyond me.)

@travelsonic Well the Japanese version had a sound chip in the cartridge which made the sound less dull.

basically, they tried to use one of the square waves for sound effects.
if you ever played the game, you remember how the sound effects would drop off at the beginning of the stage's new song? And then come back on a few?

What happened in Konami's bringing this to the NES? Most other NES games' songs were far more intricate than this.
