@Shravius yeah

Wish I had had a chance to see him perform live.. :(
-
RIP Sir :-(
-
Well it is used in concerts as an accompaniment to singers, other instruments etc.
It is not the same as the 'mridanga' or 'khol' that harekrishna people use
-
i see what you're saying here, he keeps switching between conventional and pazhani style while playing the nadais. He starts with the conventional and when the sammam is coming up he switches, so almost every other second. Interesting observation, he may be either showing off or some parts may be easier to play by pazhani style while others with conventional.

Wow, his bols are so crisp and clear! o_o

really good

@Jannagan - Good observation! Watched it carefully a couple of times. He actually uses the traditional dhin - where the middle finger stays in the air, and the tonal beat comes from the index finger, and the ring finger just provides natural support and does not muffle the nAdam. Much of his sollukattu (combination of phrases) combines Pudukkottai Dakshinamurthy Pillai's lessons and Thanjavur Vaidhyanatha Iyer's lessons - a divine combination indeed!

great video SOTD!
just a question....does Vellore sir use the pazhani style dhin, or the conventional. In this video it looks like he uses both....

@Jannagan,
I have not paid much attention to that. Thanks for pointing it out. We live in a hybridised age. everyone uses techniques from various schools

Where do you live? If you are lucky there may be a teacher available in the local area.
