Andrew Wasson of Creative Guitar Studio answers a viewers question...

Q: Can you do a video on the jazz ballad approach. I've read on how you can use; Major and Minor chord substitutions, chromatics, extensions and 3rd's and other stuff like inversions to pull the melody along in the top voice. But, I just don't exactly know when this stuff works, or it doesn't work. Can you maybe teach a jazz ballad piece and show this stuff happening?
- Grady, Austrailia

A: Jazz Ballads are really nice to work on for building your chops in the department of solo guitar. Creating your song arrangements allows you to consider a number of theoretical concepts with your chord harmonies. I'll go through a number of melody arranging ideas you can try and that should help you with putting different voices into chords under the melodic phrases that you're playing.

  • How could I get an MP3 of that intro. piece? Do you sell any of these introduction pieces in the videos? There are others I'd like to get too. Please respond. Thanks.

  • @jippie11261 > Thanks for the interest, I never thought about it... I guess I could sell them. I'd just have to separate the audio from the video track & create a section over at my site in the shopping cart system. Perhaps, I'll put a few up and see what the interest is like, (if it's overall worth the extra effort). Thanks again!
