A documentary film that explores questions and social issues surrounding the Cape Verdean identities relating to race, religion, ethnicity, art, music and language. The film returns back to the Portuguese colonial days of slavery, the post colonial African liberation movement in the Cape Verde Islands, Guine Bissau, Senegal and Ghana. The film visually narrates stories of the different ethnic groups, tribes and nationalities brought out of Africa during the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade of the 1700's.
For over 550 years, Blackness became the norm for everyone from the continent of Africa.
Guenny Pires's personal quest to discover his true identity takes him on a journey across the Atlantic, building a cultural relationship from the West Coast of Africa to Western societies. What is my real identity? Africa's diverse cultures and languages and the cultural connection between West Coast of Africa and the East Coast of the Americas particularly Brazil, Cuba, Aruba and Curacao. In Search of my Identity gives the audience another point of view given my background and prospective, another angles other than what the Europeans and Americans have written and taught in schools.
This film shows how life experiences and struggles create encounters between generations, cultures, and histories. What was lost in the trans-Atlantic slave trade? How have Western societies been using economical power to recreate a new African identity? These are some of the questions the film will explore.
In Search of My Identity is a Txan Film production that has been filming in 15 different countries.
