May 29, 2011 - Washington, D.C.
Rolling Thunder is a group that first staged a motorcycle demonstration in Washington DC in 1988 to protest the government's lack of action in locating and bringing home Vietnam War POW's. Named after Operation Rolling Thunder, a bombing campaign against North Vietnam in 1965, the annual Memorial Day Rolling Thunder Motorcycle Rally has grown to several hundred thousand bikers.
The run starts in the staging areas of the Pentagon parking lots, crosses the Arlington Memorial Bridge, proceeds on Constitution Ave to the Capitol, and loops back on Independence Ave to the softball field located just to the south of the Lincoln and Korean War Memorials. This year it took about 3 hours to completely empty the Pentagon staging areas.
