The Surma people have to be, hands down, the most unique ethnic group seen in this area of Ethiopia. Your first sight of a Surma woman with lip plate inserted has got to make you really THINK - What women do for beauty!

Imagine, sitting still while a tribe member pulls out a few bottom teeth around age 10 and then slits your bottom lip with a Clam Shell? Add some scarification, large clay plates in ear lobes and a Surma women is considered Beautified and ready for marriage.
