I measured the sound pressure level of a running server...

If you want to make a sense out of that, wikipedia provides some examples of sound pressure levels:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sound_pressure#Examples_of_sound_pressure_and_so...

For info:
Running server: 72dB (over 80dB at start)
Power off: 56dB (there is still a fan running for the power supply)

The Dell PowerEdge R200 is "silent" when compared to other servers which are almost always over 80dB (Hearing damage over long-term exposure, need not be continuous).

Some live in office copy rooms and even near users' desks. I have two Dell servers myself - an R300 and a 2950 II. The R300 is one of the quietest 1U fully redundant servers I have personally experienced, and I know the newer generations are even quieter. My 2950? Much louder but still tolerable.

  • The R200 is a wind breeze if compared to its successor... R210...
