Hardly a marching song at 88 beats, (in the British sense for military purposes) apparently meant for singing whilst standing.

Reminds me of my mother's story of being in the light infantry/artillery then moving to the main army and on the command of "Quick March" slammed into the back of the person infront of her as the number of paces per minute was slower that she had been used to.

  • The reason the march is so slow is because, when the Legion was first formed, the soldiers straggled badly. Because of this, the Legion has been allowed to march slower. But, try and make fun of this to a Legionnaire!

  • @mbabist01

  • and a fact tat they covered distances 3 times longer than "normal" French army

  • I like this march for some reason. When my daughter heard it first time and saw the legion marching, she said "Hey, the dont have to run, they are the french foreign legion, it is the others who need to run".

    Greetings from Germany

  • The French marching pace is slower than most because it's based around heartbeat. if you read the 1792 Drill manual, it explains, french soldiers move their feet diferently for the same reason. It's to help conserve energy for fighting instead of marching. Good idea I think!

  • @mbabist01 Wrong. The march is so slow because it is impossible to march in the sand any faster. The march dates back to late 19th century, but the 88 beats didn't become the standard until after the Legion got busy in North Africa.

  • What´s the problem? My former platoon-leader in the swedish army was an ex-l.

  • I heard from a legionaire that the slow march was due the sand in Africa.

  • I was under the imperssion it was 88 steps per minute was because even then they were considered the best, and given a "royal" march, a slow march.

  • this is actually 81 beats per minute :)

  • @mbabist01 you must be belguin?

  • Laurel and Hardy in the Foreign Legion ... ^^
