Mitsubishi Outlander
2003-05 models
SIDE IMPACT TEST WITHOUT OPTIONAL SIDE AIRBAGS

OVERALL EVALUATION: Poor
Injury measures Head protection Structure/safety cage
Head/neck Torso Pelvis/leg
Driver Poor Poor Poor Poor Marginal
Rear passenger Good Good Good Acceptable

Important: Side impact crash test ratings can be compared across vehicle type and weight categories.
Test details:

The Mitsubishi Outlander was introduced in the 2003 model year.

When side airbags are optional, as in this vehicle when it was tested, the Institute conducts the test without this option. If a manufacturer offering optional side airbags requests the Institute to conduct an additional test of a vehicle with this option and agrees to reimburse the cost of the vehicle, a second test is conducted. Mitsubishi did not request such a test.

Note: the 2006 model Outlander is equipped with standard side airbags for the driver and front passenger, so these ratings do not apply to 2006 models.
Injury measures:

Driver — Measures taken from the dummy indicate that serious skull fracture and/or brain injuries, plus rib fractures and/or internal organ injuries as well as a fracture of the pelvis would be likely in a crash of this severity. Serious neck injuries would also be possible.

Rear passenger — Measures taken from the dummy indicate a low risk of any significant injuries in a crash of this severity.
Head protection:

Driver — The dummy's head was hit by the intruding barrier, producing high head injury measures.

Rear passenger — The dummy's head was hit by the pillar behind the rear passenger door. This pillar is required by federal standard to provide some protection for occupants' heads.

  • I'm not surprised that the Outlander has a poor safety rating. 2 weeks ago a local kid was driving one of these Outlanders and was hit by another car on the driver's side...sadly he died at the scene, and the other passenger was seriously injured. The car did not have side curtain airbags.

  • That's sad to hear...

  • where is the SRS

  • these cars suckkk in accidents... i was in a accident during a snow storm last week.. i hit a pothole and braked slid into a utility pole.. luckly i walked away with no serious injuries because impact was on the passanger side, but the cars totaled the window shatterd, frame bent, and roof popped up.. pretty bad

  • i own this vehicle and i am never driving it over 30 mph ever again

  • Ahaa, yeah, its Hondas name. Outlander also has that as standard, and Mitsubishi was first car, wich had that system at all, in 1980's in Mitsubishi Sigma, that was first passenger production car on earth whit electronic active stability/traction control thing. :)

  • ESC is electronic stability control, a program that helps drivers remain in control during skids

  • I wouldnt say so, Outlander got as good rating as CRV in crashtests here. Might be that there is different versions in europe than in usa. What is ESC ? Outlander also has ASC and ATC as standard.
