I knew I was in for a treat the instant I saw the trailer for Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. The film itself did not disappoint - except in that it did not include the music from the trailer.

This very effective trailer features music from three films - Planet of the Apes, Backdraft, and Drop Zone - as well as some music written expressly for use in movie trailers. It was the epic passages from Drop Zone ("Too Many Notes - Not Enough Rests" and "After the Dub") that really grabbed my attention, but the rest was good, too. So good that I began trying to figure it out by ear on the piano, and later tracked down all the recordings I could find.

What you're hearing is the result of the latter. I've edited together all the recordings to produce a version of the audio without the sound effects and dialogue (with one notable exception...you'll see what I mean). It's generally quite accurate, though I've neglected to include a few very small edits that slightly change a few rhythms.

I also had to re-create a bit of the music - near the beginning, percussion from Danny Elfman's score to Planet of the Apes can be heard, but there's a string part that's not in the original. I couldn't figure out where this was from, so I created my own version using Finale 2008 and mixed it into the edit. Works pretty well, though I'd still like the original - if you have any info, I'd love to hear from ya!

Please don't ask me for mp3s of this. While I'm generally happy to provide mp3s of my piano renditions, this is actual copyrighted work. If you like the music, please just go out and buy the soundtracks for Planet of the Apes, Backdraft, and Drop Zone. They're all worth it, I assure you - these are just some highlights.

Enjoy!

  • When a movie trailer is released, 90% of the time, music from the trailer is not used in the movie.

  • @benkindelstudios That's correct.

  • Cool!!!

  • 1:28 = the best music ever

    Agreed so very much.

  • @HEJJAGAEGERALLT The "Too Many Notes - Not Enough Rests" and "After the Dub" songs

  • @Andybato which song do you refer to? :o

  • 1:28 is definitely the best soundtrack.... absolutely perfect!!!!

  • Ever since I had that same song used in the "The Mask of Zorro" and "Pirates of the Caribbean" trailers, I always imagine big things in movies, and they always tend to be epic whenever that song appears!
