@formerlyaskeptic1 Bach has strong Gothic tendencies - particularly on display in organ fantasies and preludes, and also very much in the English suites - where one can just sense the grey overcast days of central Germany and the fatalism that goes with continued focus
The tempo of the intro has strong sense of justness to it, although that is belied by the incredibly bland unvaried articulation, and a general lack of color in his view. His landscape is like a house wherein every room is painted beige and every floorboard pickled white. His greatest strength here to my ears is the elegance of ornament and his finely articulated bass voice. His first major opinion coming at 3:34, it was then he threatened to awaken me.
Years ago I used to think the English suites were incomprehendable, but now I enjoy certain movements very much, thanks for Andras Schiff and YouTube. Sometimes JSBach's music seems to be about tragedy or fate. The Suite has a sort of fantasy type melody to it, meaning that it an extra other-worldly sound about it, or very dramatic, sort of wild. W see this wildness pronounced in the last movement.
