Evil Ebenezer has been hailed as the best new voice in Canadian rap by Exclaim Magazine. His debut album Call Me Evil was nominated for Best Hip-Hop/Rap Music Album at the 2005 West Coast Music Awards, and its video single Told You So garnered a LEO Award for Best Music Video 2006 at the annual B.C. Film Industry Night. With numerous accolades and a glowing resume including over 250 tour dates in the last two years alone, you'd think that Evil would be elbow-deep in bling, bitches and riches; Right? Wrong. There is more to being a rapper than validation and acclaim, hit singles or sold-out shows. There is a whole world of hidden heartbreak, lonely nights on the road, hunger pains and inter-personal drama. Worse still, there is the soul-crushing indifference of friends and family.
Music can take its toll, especially on rap veterans like Evil, who has been on his grind for over a decade. Evil describes this experience with honesty and candor on his leak single Take Me With You from his forthcoming album Evil Eye, slated for release in 2010. The storyline follows the protagonist leaving his small town in hopes of a better lot, only to find a string of disappointing experiences that make him question his mission. The video for the single will pay tribute to Ebenezers small town upbringing in Fraser Valley BC. Fittingly, Evil's multi-talented best friend and long-time collaborator Stu Ray both produced the track and directed the music video. Ray has been working alongside Evil for over 15 years. He co-produced Evil's debut Call Me Evil along with Vaughn Oliver (aka DJ U-turn of The Draftdodgers), and handled the bulk of the production duties on Evil's highly acclaimed second album The Wanderer.
On his third official Camobear release Evil Eye, Ebenezer has stepped outside his comfort zone to find Vancouvers grimiest and hottest producers. The bulk of the album's production was handled by Evils new ally; Surrey producer Whalley Wonka, including the infectious Ghostbusters and the street bangers Green Goblin, and Highway, while producer Stroker DeLuca lends his talent to the captivating Runaway. Fellow Vancouver singer NaRai appears on Love You (produced by newcomer Makem Def); a track which further elaborates on the themes of heartbreak resulting from the pressure of road life. Also contributing cuts are Ozzie Chan, Devy D., Sweatshop Unions Metty The Dertmerchant and D-Rec for the Josh Martinez assisted Blackbird. Of course, no Evil effort could be complete without cameos from Young Sin and Snak the Ripper fellow Camobear artists who, along with Evil make up super-group Brass Tackz. The dynamic trio flexes their muscles on Waiting (also produced by Wonka).
The rap-game is not always a pretty place, but like all unpretty places it is not without its charm. Evils haunting, melancholic ballads are certainly not without their silver lining. The glimmers of hope in the face of despair and the hunger to persevere are evident in Evils song writing, and his raw, energetic shows keep audiences coming back for more. Never one to disappoint, Evil will dedicate this year to touring across Canada both as a solo artist, in support of Evil Eye and with Brass Tackz, at the Warped Tour.
