Released by Epyx for the Commodore 64 and now available on the Nintendo Wii's Virtual Console, California Games is a collection of six sports mini-games that players compete in for a high score. Players can choose from half-pipe, freestyle foot bag, surfing, frisbee, roller skating and BMX racing. Think of it like a precursor to Wii Sports and Wii Sports Resort. Extremely popular for its time, California Games was eventually ported to multiple platforms including the Atari ST, Sega Master System, Apple II, Amiga and the original Nintendo Entertainment System. It's popularity on the NES also made it the focus of an episode of everyone's favorite Saturday morning cartoon, Captain N: The Game Master.

Despite the fact it was released over 22 years ago, California Games still holds up fairly well and fans of mini-games or party games will enjoy this collection as well. With the exception of the BMX one, which is bad (maybe, you'll like it though), they all do a good job of wasting time and keeping you entertained. Personally, I enjoy the foot bag and half-pipe events the most. For only 500 Wii points, California Games isn't a bad investment. This is especially true for gamers who enjoy a quick turnaround and some instant gratification in their games. If this sounds like you, then I recommend picking it today.

  • I got introduced to California games on the sega master system in the USA, and it was my first system. That version looks much better than the commodore version but seems to be identical in all other ways

  • Loved that game as a kid.
