Mahalo biology expert Mary Poffenroth tells you all about how cells were first discovered.
Discovery of Cells
---------------------------------------------------------------------
In 1655, English scientist Robert Hooke made an observation that would change biological research forever. While examining a dried piece of cork under a homemade microscope, Hook discovered small chambers and named them "cells" after the living quarters of monks. However, he was only able to see the cell wall since dried cork is no longer a living cell.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9obZ4qLFr5o&feature=player_embedded
Further Discovery
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Within a decade, scientists concluded that cells were not empty as Hooke originally thought, but were filled with a watery substance known as cytoplasm. Over the next 175 years, research led to "Cell Theory," first proposed by German botanist Matthias Schleiden and physiologist Theodor Schwann. The theory was refined by German doctor, anthropologist and biologist Rudolf Virchow in 1858.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9obZ4qLFr5o&feature=player_embedded
