El Museo del Barrio, New York's premier Latino and Latin American cultural institution, has begun an extensive interior and exterior renovation project by award-winning New York-based Gruzen Samton Architects. Gruzen Samton's design of the museum's space in the Heckscher Building, 1230 Fifth Avenue at 104th Street, which received an award for Excellence in Design by the Art Commission of the City of New York, features a transparent glass facade creating an open and inviting cultural facility. It will enhance the visibility of the art and programs from within as well as affirm El Museo's increasingly important role as one of the world's major institutions dedicated to the preservation and presentation of Latin American and Latino arts and culture. A renovated courtyard, improved lobby space and signage, an expanded museum shop, upgraded elevators and new restrooms and coat-check facilities are also included in the new plan.
