The Madrid coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo's decision to play an attacking trident of Raúl, Ronaldo and Owen paid dividends as his side beat Barcelona in a thrilling match to keep their dreams of winning La Liga alive.

All three, plus the midfielder Zinedine Zidane, found the back of the net as Madrid closed the gap at the top of the table to six points with seven games remaining.

The triumph will give Madrid a huge morale boost in the run-in to the end of the season, but they could still have reasons to regret Ronaldinho's 72nd-minute free-kick.

Madrid knew that anything other than three points would mean the end of their championship aspirations, so they played with a sense of urgency from the start. They were ahead in the seventh minute when Zidane took advantage of a sluggish Barça defence to head home a Ronaldo cross unmarked from four yards out. Zidane suffered in the process, however, because his momentum carried him into the Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdés who crashed into him and pushed him into the post where the French World Cup winner smacked the upright with his face.

Both sides attacked at a relentless pace and after 20 minutes Madrid doubled their lead. Ronaldo stole in unmarked at the far post to head home Beckham's free-kick from close range.

Barcelona were reeling, but Samuel Eto'o showed his scoring instincts in the 28th minute, sprinting into the Madrid area to poke the ball home. Ludovic Giuly then forced a save from Iker Casillas in the 32nd minute and fired wide again in the 40th, while the Madrid goalkeeper denied Giovanni van Bronckhorst just before the break.

Just when it seemed Barça would equalise Raúl made it 3-1 when he slid the ball home at the near post with virtually the last kick of the half. Barça tried to get back into the game but it looked to be over in the 65th minute. Eto'o was robbed in the Madrid half, Beckham picked the ball up and his through-ball picked out Owen, who bore down on the Barça goal and beat Valdés for his 11th league goal of the season.

In the 73rd minute Ronaldinho brought everyone in the Bernabéu down to earth when he curled a free-kick over the wall and into the right corner. Any momentum Barça recovered was lost when Eto'o was stretchered off, hands over face, leaving the visitors to play without their prolific striker.
