Pamiris in China, also called Tajiks in China (Chinese: 塔吉克族, Pinyin: Tǎjíkèzú), are one of the 56 nationalities officially recognized by the People's Republic of China.[citation needed]
This group, with a population of 41,028 (in 2000), is located mainly in China's western Xinjiang region with 60% living in Tashkurgan Tajik Autonomous County. They are a collection of over a dozen small East Iranian ethnic groups. The Ethnologue claims that they are actually Shugni and Wakhi, distinct from the West Iranian Persian-speaking Tajiks of Tajikistan. Aurel Stein and other writers from his time referred to them simply as Sarikoli. Some have referred to them simply as "Mountain Tajiks."[6] Robert Shaw considered them Sarikolis and Wakhis, referring to them collectively as Ghalchah.

  • Are these Wakhi People?

  • @NizarAlvi90 Maybe? Population and demographics: A very rough estimate puts the population of Wakhis at about 100,000.[citation needed] The population is divided among four different countries: Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Pakistan, and Xinjiang in western China. In China and Afghanistan the Wakhi are officially recognized as "Tajiks", while in Tajikistan Wakhi are recognized by the state as Tajiks but also self-identify as Pamiris.

  • @harbin88 Looked some of Wakhi people in Pakistan, they don't look alike.

  • They are not Tajiks, they are Ugurs who speak a little Forsi because the area from Iran until china were forsizabon or spoken Farsi!

  • Tajiks and Ugurs looks different, you should be able to tell. They are real Tajiks.

  • These people look to me an extension of the people living in northern areas of paksitan bordering china such as Hunza, Gilgit etc. , even the headgear of the women is also same as that of women from hunza valley in northern pakistan, Their music and dance is almost the same as that of hunza people, but they just seem to have more chinese blood and features.

  • They are Pamirian and their language is one of the pamirian languages (sarikoli)

  • Nice documentary

  • @harbin88 Thanks for your info:)

  • @harbin88

yes, they are tajiks. relate to persian culture

  • @kadirandme then why their dances and clothes are totally different? Why?

  • @harbin88 exactly - Tajiks and Uygurs are different. And these people don't look like ordinary Tajiks. I am sure they may have Tajik ancestors but these people are greatly mixed with Turks and Mongols. It's not even their facial features, look at their cloth and look at traditional Tajik cloth and you will see difference.
