What is IMAP?
IMAP is gradually replacing POP as the main protocol used by email clients in communicating with email servers.

  • Hi there,

I have a gmail email address also,

But when I delete an email from my iPhone mail app....it also deletes on my macbook mail. I want to keep all emails on my mac book but don't want them all on my iPhone...as once I've read them once on my phone i don't need want it on my phone anymore...but when I delete the mail....it's also gone in my macbook mail.

    Can you help?

    Cheers,

    Shaun

  • Do you have issues with deleting emails on the Mail app and then the emails not getting deleted on the server? I've been messing around with many many settings and i can't seem to figure it out.

I've unchecked the "store deleted files on the server" and they don't get erased....

How do you "nuke" emails and completely delete them?? When i delete an email, it goes to the trash folder on the Mail app, but not on the trash folder on the gmail browser........what's up with that???

  • Where does the message go when you delete it??? I would still like to be able to access it in my Mac's Mail's Trash folder, but that folder isn't even showing up. I can't find it in any of the Gmail folders, either. (My IMAP Gmail was the default account when I booted this sucker up.) And btw, you sound like Dane Cook.

  • Thanks. Very helpful.

  • GREAT TUTORIAL !!!

I am getting ALL my gmail messages in my INBOX in the newly created IMAP account. In other words...even thoough my INBOX in Gmail is empty...the IMAP account's INBOX is showing over 1000 messages Any thoughts or advice would be helpful

Thanks Again for a wonderfully CONCISE tutorial.

  • Hi, I'm trying to understand to undo delete's. I tried going to the trash folder and doing "use this mailbox for trash", but that doesn't seem to work, at least not consistently. Do you have any advice?

  • so how come the mail bounce through the folders if you try to delete it completely from the clien? I delete it in apple mail it jumps to trash, i go into trash and delete it in trash, it jumps to all mail... lol, i delete it from all mail, it jumps to trash... all i want is that the gmail server synchronises with my client... whats the deal?

  • Do as vid, but don't forget lastly:

    IMPORTANT

Always set the mailboxes correctly, by for example selecting "Gmail/Drafts" and going to "Mailbox" menu then "Use This Mailbox For" then "Drafts". This will then move the Gmail drafts to be under the Drafts list in your Mail.app client.

Do likewise for Sent, Trash, and Junk.

Took me hours to find this out, as otherwise they are all bunched together at the bottom of the mailboxes!

Youtube search for "AskTheMacGuyDotCom" video, very good.

  • Great clear instructions and demo of what the extra folders mean in mail...

  • Thank You so much..... a very simple tutorial walkthrough
