PEC-India (Physical Education Cards) as part of the British Council's Olympic Legacy programme was featured by NDTV within their Marks for Sport Campaign that is being lead by the Indian Cricket Guru- Sachin Tendulkar and supported by eminent personalities from India including ace Sport and Bolly wood stars.

Physical education as an integral part of Health and Physical Education has been prescribed as a compulsory subject in the school curriculum from classes I to X since 1978, but it is not transacted effectively and neither is treated at par with other core subjects. Efforts are now being made to raise the profile of PE and school sport both a the policy level and through engaging public and private sponsors and brand ambassadors.

NDTV Marks for Sport is one such campaign. A huge nationwide interest has been generated but in the absence of any systematic mechanism that supports marking the only available option are the PEC cards

PEC Cards are a competent age and skill specific curriculum resource tool that provide an inclusive and interesting experience to the children at primary school stage and facilitate the process of engaging them intensively in games and activities. Each Card is devoted to a particular set of activities aimed at agility, balance and coordination for classes I-III and agility, balance, coordination speed and strength for classes IV and V.

The cards are linked to the National Curriculum of NCERT and also through physical activities enable cross curricular learning (language, science, numeracy and literacy)

The cards have been developed by British Council with their delivery partners, UK Sport, Youth Sport Trust, UK and UNICEF and the Ministry of Human Resource Development and Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports of Government of India with key national and state institutions such as NCERT, CBSE, LNUPE (PE College), Special Olympics alongwith Indian school teachers and sport coaches.

It has been proved that the basic premise of this strategy that every child matters and also that games and sports can develop observation skills, analytical skills, evaluation skills, leadership and teamwork skills, communication skills, emotional and intrapersonal intelligence and motor skills, has been realised.

To ensure inclusiveness a set of Pec Ability Cards have been developed in partnership with Special Olympics Bharat.

PEC has been established as a fine example of sharing best practices between India and the UK and together this approach is working to create long-term, transformational change for young people through and beyond International Inspiration and the Games in 2012 (legacy) to achieve the programme's vision.
