No Kata my ass!

no need to apologize,,but accepted. i accept thats they way they do it,,but i think that tori should move earlier to take uke's momentum and energy. you comment would be welcomed. Colm

just becus its not the way you want it to be, doesnt mean it is wrong, the club at which these people train focuses on making it work well, not on making it look good, the way you do it is all well and good but this is just different, but still good too. the reason uke is running at tori is because the uke is the attacker and tori is the defender, this is no kata so it is more dynamic than kata which is started in static.
i apologize for what i said before. we should agree to disagree :)

I dont think its really about sitting here and saying my club does this or that. If we watch Tomiki and Oba and later high grade aikidoka that studied under them they all say the same. Im not about to argue with Tomiki and it would be a very ballsey thing for anyone to do. If you re going to argue with the founders way then you need to have eally good reason backed with great explanation. If you watch Oba Uke for Tomiki he dosent come in with a attack like here. He keeps basic basic.

the club i'm in meet hand blade to hand blade and then take a step backwards, and then meet in the middle, when uke moves tori moves,,it works and looks a lot better than uke running or bouncing across the mats to tori(which I think looks very silly). If that performance was produced in the club i'm in, it would NOT have made the grade.

I honestly couldnt say why tomiki specified 4m maybe its just a nice distance its two whole mats. There might be a specific reason but if so im unsure. But i do know that tomiki and all other high ranking akidoka are very peticular on this. But in this film you can see they start 4m but only uke comes in. Tori practicly stays put. There is no middle meeting point. No display of Tegatana distance. You would need to speak to a wiser man than me to answer why specificly 4m
-
ca u please tell me why they are starting 4mts apart??
-
Thats the way i see it.Its BASIC and defined. 4m apart, meet, avoid, break, balance
,show control ect.I dont see that here. What i see is uke giveing a full on attack which is fine in randori but this is Kata not randori and the two shouldnt be confused. If you ever train with Shishida, Nariyama,Uno,Yamada,Loi Lee they are peticular about this meeting point. I its a lack of understanding by people that rather than seek answers adapt things to what they feel it more realistic and miss the point......... -
u dont need uke to run at u for him to give a committed attack,,why are u standing so far apart,,,looks REALLY BAD
Uke gives a commited attack. Tori MUST avoid or get smacked. He can use the energy for balance breaking and apply the technique. What's wrong with that? We don't meet in the middle, that's just a different way. This way of doing those katas is approved by the head of the BAA. Doing it dynamically, teaches you the techniques and the right timing at the same time, and prepare you for freeplay. Now, it's all down to personal preferences. I don't say it's better, that's just how I do it.
