I read about an 18th century surgery to remove a tumour in a woman's breast, and she was awake the entire time, later noting in her journal that she could hear the metal instruments scraping the cancerous tissue from her breast-bone...

dreadful operation... but then, look at those stones. imagine THAT scraping up your bladder continually. ~twitch~ agonizing. it would have had to have been bad if people were willing to risk death to make it stop... not unlike fistula operations of the time.
