It's not multiplied by 'v', the 'v' is a subscript. He needs a better equation editor, but agrees with you.

But this is actually incorrect because work can be added (or extracted) without change in volume - for instance, a paddle wheel, turbine etc. He also jumped to closed systems without stating it. Open systems have convected energy and flow work! He is a chemist and not an engineer!

if there is no volume change, then shouldn't the equation be something like this: DeltaU = q. why did u multiply the v, its constant.
