Conrad Veidt, who plays major heavy Major Strasser, was a great actor in the silent era...German Version of "The Cabinet of Doctor Calgiri" anyone? Conrad HAD to emmigrate to the US because he was of the Jewish faith, in the early 1930's from Germany. Staying put in Germany meant a death sentence for him & his family. When you look upon the faces of the actors in CASABLANCA; they all have similar tales to tell. Casablanca is a movie with so many stories, woven within its tapestry. Peace.

To metal134. the ending makes perfect sense if you look upon Louis as being a perpetual fence sitter throughout the movie. It took a combination of Rick being finally put into real jeopardy and the inevitable march of the world towards war for Louis to make a choice about where he stood. And truth be told there were literally hundreds of thousands of people who were fence sitters in real life before being forced by the onslaught of history into having make a choice.
