Welcome to my Spring Garden

This is what's happening around my garden at home right now. The garden is a work in progress and any suggestions would be appreciated.

I am an avid birder here in America. By this, I mean that I manage wild birds in my garden.

English House Sparrows and European Starlings enter our space at their own risk. These two species of exotic birds have been responsible for the decline of the Eastern, Mountain and Western Bluebird species in America. When last did you see a Bluebird? The English House Sparrow will enter a living Bluebird nest and will kill the nestlings and the parents by pecking at their heads until they are dead. There is no more disturbing sight at a Bluebird nest-box than to see an English House Sparrow sitting on that box knowing that there is a brood of live Bluebird nestlings inside. You will know with a certain dread that if those Bluebirds are not already dead, they soon will be.

The same can be said for European Starlings if you have Woodpeckers of any species nesting on your property. The sight of a European Starling at a Woodpecker nest is a sure recipe for disaster. European Starlings are also reponsible for Purple Martins abandoning their colonies.

Some might say - leave them alone - it is only nature doing what it does best. I would like to remind you that The English House Sparrow and the European Starling ar NOT native American birds. They were imported into America in the mid-1800's because the immigrants wanted to have each of the species of British birds mentioned in Shakespeare's works in the New World. They were imported for other reasons as well.

So, having said all that, comments telling me what a hateful person I am for trapping and disposing of wild birds will be deleted. I really don't want to hear your opinions unless you know what you are talking about. Our property is a Registered Wildlife Habitat which is registered with and by the National Wildlife Federation of America - number 77120 - who FULLY endorse this management of these trash birds, as they are known amongst the birding community of America!

I will post more information on this subject shortly. Please enjoy my garden.

  • Maybe you could do a video on how you trap the sparrows and starlings!

Our local deer have decided that they like the leaves of our cherry trees and other fruit trees. Wish I could get rid of them.

  • Hello there LAW,

The weeping trees are called "Weeping Cherries" or Drooping Cherries as my hubby calls them. LOL. They flower prolifically in spring, but they are not fruit-bearing. They look beautiful year round because of the weeping effect. You can get these trees at Home Depot.

  • Good job getting rid of those nasty house sparrows and starlings. Sometimes, you have to do what you have to do. Wonderful garden!

  • You have a lovely garden.

  • Thank you californiacrazybeck.

  • Why, thank you Tony C Silva. I am always honoured when the maestro of YouTube filming drops in to visit me. Sorry I couln't offer you tea and scones with jam and cream. Yummmmy!

Have a good day further. :-)
